The post is offered with a standard, 10 PA contract.The appointee will, together with consultant colleagues, be responsible for the provision of a comprehensive, efficient and cost-effective clinical medical microbiology service including:-advice regarding appropriate specimensinvolvement in specimen analysisvalidation and interpretation of results for transmission to wardsregular ward visits (incl. ITU/HDU each day)attendance at various multidisciplinary team meetings (cardiology, haematology, orthopaedic, spinal, vascular)advice on antimicrobial prescribing including regular antimicrobial ward roundsregular review of patients with C. difficile infectioninvolvement in the management of individual patients through full clinical liaisonProvision of virology/serology services as appropriate.Appropriate involvement in preparation of policies, SOPs, assessment and introduction of new methods, business planning, etc.Managerial and administrative duties as agreed with the Clinical Lead for Microbiology and the Clinical Director.Such additional duties as may be required from time to time either by the Clinical Lead for Microbiology or Clinical Director, after appropriate consultation.With consultant and other colleagues (and when necessary with the support of the local HPU), provision of microbiological and epidemiological support, including surveillance, for Consultants in Communicable Disease Control, Environmental Health Officers and others, and for clinical staff in hospitals and the community, within the catchment area of the Department of Microbiology.Collaboration with Public Health England’s central reference & epidemiological facilities in the reporting and investigation of infections, control of outbreaks, development of laboratory methods, involvement in surveys, etc surveys, etc. surveys, etc.Public Health microbiology as required, in collaboration with the local Health Protection Unit, in the catchment area of the laboratory

Critical Care is a dynamic and forward thinking service providing care to people and their families, not bed numbers or disease processes. We were rated ‘good’ by the CQC in 2016 and strive to continually to improve. We seek colleagues that share our values to help in this endeavour. We are currently working towards introducing a “block” working pattern for day-time cover within the ICU and would expect the successful applicant to have input into this.The Unit consists of eight single rooms to provide level three care including one negative pressure sideroom. An adjoining six-bedded area provides level two care, with a further four bedded area providing coronary care under the jurisdiction of the cardiology service. Bed capacity is used flexibly depending on patient requirement. Admissions number around 550 per annum and consist of Medical, General Surgical, Orthopaedic, Urological, Spinal Injuries, Gynaecology and Obstetric patients. The facility exists for the management of paediatric patients should there be lack of tertiary capacity.There are Clinical Education Centres on both hospital sites with library, study and IT facilities. The trust appraisal process for trainers and benefits from the trust’s educator development programme. Bursaries are available to support those trainers who wish to undertake a formal qualification in teaching. All the consultants and a number of the specialty doctors are registered as Clinical Supervisors. There are a smaller number of Educational Supervisors within the department, who are allocated 1-2 of the 11 rotational trainees who are attached to the department from the HEE NW School of Anaesthesia. The usual allocation is 4 CT1, 3 CT2, 1 ACCS and 3 ST3/4 trainees.

The candidate will have an 11PA contract.Responsibilities:To participate in the provision of a combination of services, split between the two hospital site.Provision of anaesthetic services for the variety of district general surgical services for adults and children.The post holder will participate in a consultant on call rota (1 in 8) which will involve emergency out of hours cover for emergency anaesthesia, admissions to, and on going care of patients in ICU, emergency anaesthetic cover for the maternity unit, and anaesthetic assistance in the stabilisation of critically ill children.The post holder will be expected to take an active part, with the other Consultant Anaesthetists, in teaching undergraduate students, postgraduate doctors and other allied healthcare professionals.Full Job Description available upon request!Health ServiceThis is a full time post based at both hospitals. On call duties include providing anaesthetic services for emergency surgery, maternity, paediatric emergencies for stabilisation and transfer, ICU cover on a 1 in 9 basis. The role is divided between Pain Medicine and Anaesthetics. The Pain Team consists of 1 Consultant plus two vacant positions, 1 Acute/Chronic Pain Sister, 2 Acute/Chronic Pain Nurses and 1 Chronic Pain Health Care Assistant, for outpatients and inpatients. The Pain Team see’s on average 1300 new patients per year.This is an opportunity to take the Pain Service forward, developing the service within the Hospital. We have a close link with the Psychologist and GP with special interest in Pain Management, and Specialist Physiotherapist.The department covers a wide range of surgical specialties including General, Urology, Obstetrics & Gynaecology, Ophthalmology, Day Case ENT Surgery, Dental Surgery, Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery and Intensive Care.There is a Supra Regional Spinal Injuries Unit at the Hospital site and an acute and chronic pain service exists on both sites
