Medical Librarians are highly valued members of the healthcare team, playing a crucial role in ensuring the delivery of quality patient care. They work closely with physicians, allied health professionals, and researchers to keep them updated on the latest advancements in their respective fields. In addition to their knowledge and expertise, medical librarians also assist with various administrative tasks such as material checkouts, due date stamping, fine collection, and maintaining the organization of physical and electronic resources. They are proficient in handling diverse media formats including CD-ROMs, DVDs, databases, and internet-based platforms.
General Responsibilities:
1. Conduct medical literature searches using evidence-based medicine techniques to support physicians, medical students, and other healthcare professionals.
2. Provide access to healthcare information for patients through consumer health libraries, hospitals, or academic medical center libraries.
3. Offer orientations and instructional sessions to students, guiding them on effectively utilizing library resources and conducting bibliographic database searches.
4. Utilize a wide range of materials, from print sources to electronic databases, to access and deliver relevant information.
5. Design and manage websites, internet blogs, distance education programs, and digital libraries to enhance accessibility and knowledge dissemination.
6. Engage in outreach programs targeting public health departments, consumers, off-site students, and unaffiliated healthcare providers to promote information literacy and resource utilization.
