Mental Health Counselor (MHC)
Description:
A Mental Health Counselor is a professional who helps individuals cope with emotional, mental, and sometimes dependency disorders. They approach their work holistically, using a 'wellness' model that focuses on and encourages the client's strengths. Mental Health Counselors have different job duties and require different education and training than psychologists.
General Responsibilities:
1. Examine issues including substance abuse, aging, bullying, anger management, careers, depression, relationships, LGBTQ issues, self-image, stress, and suicide.
2. Develop service plans and conduct reviews as needed throughout the duration of treatment.
3. Complete and maintain documentation according to federal and state guidelines.
4. Communicate with clients' families.
5. Identify roadblocks to recovery/progress.
6. Encourage clients to discuss emotions and experiences.
7. Provide various outpatient mental health services with the goal of patient recovery.
8. Conduct intakes and monitor individual, group, and family therapies.
