Clinical Pharmacology

Clinical pharmacologists are physicians who specialize in the science of medicines and their clinical use. Their main role is to improve patient care through safe, economic, and effective use of medicines. They combine their role in clinical practice with the development and implementation of new therapies, education and training of current and future prescribers, and promotion of evidence-based therapeutics through local and national policy. General Responsibilities: 1. Improve the care of patients through safe, effective, and efficient use of medicines. 2. Provide specialist advice to patients and colleagues to improve patient outcomes and experiences. 3. Provide specialist advice and an on-call service to all allied healthcare professionals. 4. Provide specialist advice on the interactions of different medicines and how these might affect patients. 5. Deliver prescribing education to promote safe and effective use of medicines. 6. Advise on the cost-effective, safe, and rational use of medicines on a population level. 7. Participate in health economic assessments. 8. Ensure the cost-effectiveness of new treatments and make recommendations on medicine usage. 9. Work with industry to improve the use of current medicines and to develop new medicines through clinical trials work. 10. Provide expertise in the design and delivery of clinical trial and experimental medicine, and other research relating to pharmacology & therapeutics. 11. Investigate and manage adverse drug reactions, overdose, and poisoning.
