Medical Microbiology

Medical Microbiologists are licensed doctors who provide services to aid in the management of infectious diseases and help ensure the safety of those at risk of acquiring such diseases. They support and oversee the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illnesses caused by microorganisms, including viruses, fungi, and parasites. Medical Microbiologists identify the most effective treatment for specific infectious diseases and monitor patients after treatment. General Responsibilities: 1. Provide advice on the appropriate samples to collect for diagnosing an infection, such as swabs, blood tests, or urine tests. 2. Advise on patient management and develop treatment guidelines for various conditions. 3. Offer guidance on the likely causes of infections and recommend the most suitable diagnostic tests. 4. Provide advice on result interpretation and the need for further investigations and antibiotic treatment. 5. Ensure the prompt and accurate delivery of test results to patients. 6. Identify fungal, parasitic, viral, and bacterial infections. 7. Test the strength and virulence of microbes. 8. Consult with patients and provide guidance to clinical and laboratory colleagues on investigating and treating all types of infections. 9. Ensure appropriate prescription and use of antibiotics.
