Description:
Pediatric Respiratory Therapists utilize their knowledge of Respiratory Care concepts to evaluate and recommend appropriate treatments for patients with cardiopulmonary compromise in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU), Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), and Inpatient Pediatric General Care Units. They specialize in heart and lung problems, as well as other illnesses that may cause breathing difficulties. Their responsibilities include performing chest physiotherapy to remove mucus from patients' lungs, connecting patients to ventilators for oxygen delivery, and diagnosing, monitoring, and treating respiratory issues in young patients to ensure their well-being.
General Responsibilities:
1. Consult with physicians to develop patient treatment plans
2. Perform diagnostic tests, such as measuring lung capacity
3. Treat patients using various methods, including chest physiotherapy and aerosol medications
4. Monitor and record patients' progress
5. Restore pulmonary function, alleviate pain, and support life by planning and administering medically prescribed respiratory therapy
6. Meet patient's goals and needs by conducting pulmonary function tests, assessing and interpreting evaluations and test results, and determining respiratory therapy treatment plans in consultation with physicians and by prescription
7. Help patients accomplish treatment plans and support life by administering inhalants, operating mechanical ventilators, therapeutic gas administration apparatus, environmental control systems, and aerosol generators
8. Administer respiratory therapy treatments by performing bronchopulmonary drainage, assisting with breathing exercises, and monitoring physiological responses to therapy, such as vital signs, arterial blood gases, and blood chemistry changes
9. Evaluate the effects of respiratory therapy treatment plans by observing, noting, and evaluating patients' progress and recommending adjustments and modifications
