Description:
Critical Care Respiratory therapists evaluate, treat, and care for patients with deficiencies or abnormalities of the cardiopulmonary (heart/lung) system. They provide temporary relief or administer emergency care where life is threatened. Working in collaboration with registered nurses and Critical Care Paramedics, Critical Care Respiratory therapists ensure continuity of care.
General Responsibilities:
1. Assist in diagnosing and treating people suffering from heart and lung problems.
2. Provide emergency care to patients experiencing heart attacks, drowning, shock, or other cardio-pulmonary emergencies.
3. Restore and stabilize patients, performing CPR if necessary.
4. Set up and operate respirators, mechanical ventilators, and other devices.
5. Initiate and maintain mechanical ventilation and the care of artificial airways.
6. Monitor the functioning of equipment and the patients' response to therapy, maintaining patient charts.
7. Assist patients with breathing exercises.
8. Inspect, test, and order repairs for respiratory therapy equipment.
