Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physicians, also known as Physiatrists, specialize in enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life for individuals with physical impairments or disabilities. They are dedicated to diagnosing and treating acute and chronic pain, as well as musculoskeletal injuries. Additionally, they provide comprehensive care for patients recovering from stroke, brain injuries, or spinal cord injuries. General Responsibilities: 1. Focus patient treatment on improving function 2. Provide ongoing care for disabling conditions throughout a patient's lifetime 3. Diagnose and treat pain resulting from injuries, illnesses, or disabling conditions 4. Develop and lead treatment and prevention plans 5. Collaborate with a team of medical professionals, including physical therapists, occupational therapists, and physician extenders, to optimize patient care 6. Work alongside other physicians, such as primary care physicians, neurologists, orthopedic surgeons, and more 7. Take a holistic approach by treating the whole person, not just the specific problem area
