Transfusion Medicine
Description:
Transfusion Medicine consultant has the opportunity to influence and improve transfusion safety, and contribute positively to cost containment by providing expertise as an educator, auditor of blood component usage, and providing leadership or oversight of therapeutic modalities. These specialists are versant in relevant areas of hematology, immunology, infectious disease, both clinically and from a lab standpoint, participate in establishing standards for use of these products in a health care facility, and address the legal aspects of transfusions.
General Responsibilities:
Identifying blood types and antibodies
Testing blood for viruses that might be transmitted during transfusion
Investigating harmful responses of the body to blood transfusion
Supervising the collection, separation, delivery and storage of blood components
Deals with procurement and examination of blood
Prepare the storage of blood and its components,
Developing a methods of examination of donors.
