Physicians' Assistant - Anaesthesia (UK)

Physicians' Assistant (Anaesthesia) are highly trained and skilled practitioners that work within an anaesthetic team under the direction and supervision of a Consultant Anaesthetist. When delegating responsibility, the medically qualified anaesthetist remains responsible and accountable for the Physicians' Assistant - Anaesthesia's actions. They play a crucial role in implementing the anaesthesia care plan, ensuring the safe administration and management of anaesthesia. They also contribute to the overall patient care by monitoring vital signs, maintaining a clean and safe environment, and collaborating with the operating theatre team. Additionally, they are involved in preoperative assessments, record keeping, and participating in audits and risk management activities. General Responsibilities: 1. Implementing the anaesthesia care plan, maintenance and emergence from anaesthesia under appropriate supervision 2. Initiating and managing fluid and blood therapy within the plan of care 3. Positioning or supervising the positioning of patients to assure optimal physiologic function and patient safety 4. Monitoring and maintaining a safe, clean, and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and visitors 5. Interpreting and utilising data obtained from invasive and non-invasive monitoring equipment 6. Record keeping 7. Participating in audit, complaints, compliments and clinical or non-clinical incidents 8. Risk management and health and safety recommendations 9. Liaising with the operating theatre team to ensure equipment and drugs are available and checked 10. Planning and implementing post-operative care in conjunction with staff from the post anaesthetic care unit 11. Preoperative interviewing and physiological and psychological assessment of patients 12. Collecting patient information from patients, taking a history, physical examination 13. Observing laboratory, radiographic and other diagnostic data to identify relevant problems
