Smoking Cessation Therapist
Description:
A Smoking Cessation Therapist provides direct care to patients and education to patients and their families who currently use or have a history of tobacco use. They provide assessment, counseling, education, and behavioral intervention to tobacco users. They directly assist tobacco users by using motivational interviewing techniques in deciding whether or not to make a quit attempt, obtaining and using cessation medicine, and staying abstinent from tobacco. They collaborate with staff members and patients to provide integrated, comprehensive, and patient-centered care to help patients with chronic diseases reach their health goals through tobacco treatment.
General Responsibilities:
1. Provides direct cessation services for tobacco-dependent inpatient and outpatient
2. Performs comprehensive tobacco/nicotine exposure and use assessment with a focus on current tobacco use and history
3. Coordinates tobacco treatment plan with appropriate team members for implementation
4. Obtains order from appropriate medical staff prior to initiating treatment plan
5. Assists the patient and family in acquiring skills needed to successfully utilize the tobacco treatment plan
6. Serves as a content expert in tobacco cessation best practices to provide education and behavioral modification including motivational interviewing, stages of change, and cognitive-behavioral therapy
7. Works with assigned clinics to ensure evidence-based tobacco dependence treatment is being provided to all patients being seen within the clinic
8. Provides system-level assessments within the clinic to determine quality improvement processes in regards to tobacco cessation
9. Educates and coaches a diverse population of participants in quitting tobacco by following motivational interviewing techniques
10. Explains Health Initiatives programs to participants, builds rapport, and engages callers following guidelines, protocols, and scripting
11. Documents participant data in compliance with HIPAA requirements, departmental standards, and specific client guidelines
12. Maintains friendly, confident, open, and effective communication with participants to identify program eligibility and inspire continued participation
