Description:
The Lactation Consultant/Counsellor is a professional responsible for identifying and correcting lactation problems. They provide safe, family-centered patient care by assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating lactation plans. With specialized knowledge and clinical expertise in breastfeeding/chest-feeding and human lactation, they play a crucial role in supporting and guiding mothers in their breastfeeding journey.
General Responsibilities:
1. Educate patients on correct breastfeeding techniques and provide tips during the first feedings.
2. Conduct lactation assessments, management, education, and instruction to ensure successful breastfeeding/chest-feeding.
3. Assist mothers in the transition back to work by teaching them how to maintain milk supplies and manage pumping schedules.
4. Offer consultations and prenatal education to expectant parents, preparing them for breastfeeding/chest-feeding and addressing any concerns or questions.
5. Provide postpartum consultative care, focusing on breastfeeding/chest-feeding support, family bonding, and planning.
6. Communicate effectively with patients, families, and physicians, ensuring clear and accurate information exchange.
7. Evaluate patients' response to care and initiate independent and/or collaborative changes when necessary.
